Fernandes reveals his conversation with Maguire after replacing him as captain

The captain of Manchester United, Burno Fernandes has for the first time revealed his conversation with Harry Maguire after he was stripped of the captain's armband.

The Portuguese International revealed that Harry Maguire congratulated him after the official announcement was made by Manchester United. He got the armband in 2020, succeeding Ashley Young when the England international joined Inter Milan.

"He gave me congratulations and he said he is really happy for me. I understand his position is not the best at the moment. It has to be difficult for him but he came and said congratulations to me and I am happy about that because we have always had a good relationship. Everyone already knew about the situation with Maguire but no one knew who would be the next captain. So Ten Hag broke the news in a team meeting with everyone together because it’s something we have to do more often, to keep the things inside and give the compliments inside to ourselves."

Bruno Fernandes wore the armband on Saturday, July 22, 2023, for a pre-season friendly against Arsenal in the United States with United winning the game 2-0.

Maguire expressed his disappointment when Erik Ten Hag decided to take the captain's armband from him but vowed to support the team whenever he was selected for a match.
