PSG's President Says Signing Lionel Messi is "Historic" | Watch
President of Paris Saint Germain (PSG), Nasser Al-Khelaifi, addressed the press on Wednesday, August 11th, 2021, after the club announced Lionel Messi. The Argentine signed a two-year deal with the Ligue 1 side with an option to extend by a year. He is expected to earn 25 million pounds a year after tax has been deducted.
Nasser expressed his delight at the signing of the Argentine, whose contract was not renewed by Barcelona, because of the Financial Fair Play rule in Spain.
He also appreciated Messi's team for ensuring they made the Argentine see reasons why he should join his club.
I am here to present Leo Messi as Paris Saint Germain Player. This is amazing and a historic day for the club, for the football world. It is a fantastic moment for us.
Everybody knows Leo is the only football player to have won 6 times Balon D'or and with Leo he makes the football magic beautiful and he is a winner. It will be very exciting for our supporters and the fans worldwide.
It is amazing what we try to achieve, Leo, the club, the fans. I remember the first day we started with the club ten years ago. There were people who said what they were going to do with their club, what they were going to do with their project. We had big ambition, high ambition project, football projects and we are very proud of where we are today, thanks to everybody.
There is no secret in this agreement with Leo. There was a great desire between both sides to make this happen and Leo, I would like to thank you, your wife, your father, Jorge and your team for the fantastic job you have done for making this happen.
The President also thanked his team, especially his Sporting Director, Leonardo Araújo, for ensuring that the deal came through.
I do not also forget my team, our Sports director, Leo, and the relation that we have. Alot of people do not know but I can say it now that I'm very proud of you. Honestly, I'm talking from my deepest heart, i do not anything here on my speech. You are doing a fantastic job for the supporters and for the history of the club.
Messi will wear jersey number 30, the same number he wore during his first season at Barcelona.
