Lionel Messi has revealed why he decided to join the MLS side Inter Miami instead of Barcelona or Al Halil.

After months and weeks of speculation about the future of one of the all-time greats of football, Lionel Messi, the world cup winner and Argentine captain, has finally made his decision to join the MLS side owned by David Beckham, Inter Miami.

There have been speculations as to why this was the option chosen or decided by the Argentine captain as many could have seen that he had been gearing up for a highly anticipated return to the La Liga outfit Barcelona where he spent most of his years as a football star. Messi had also had many speculating about a move to Saudi Arabia after the six-time Ballon d'Or winner had made an impromptu trip to the Arab side while still at PSG.

Lionel Messi himself has now explained the reason for this move to Inter Miami in an interview with Mundo Deportivo and Sport:

I really wanted and was very excited about being able to return, but on the other hand, after experiencing what I experienced and the way I left, I didn't want to be in the same situation again: waiting to see what would happen and leaving my future in someone else's hands.

I wanted to make my own decision, thinking about myself, about my family. Although I heard that it was being said that LaLiga had accepted everything and that everything was fine for me to come back, there were still many other things that needed to happen. I heard that they had to sell players or reduce players' salaries, and the truth is that I didn't want to go through that or take responsibility for something related to all of that. I have already been accused of many things that were not true in my career at Barcelona, and I was already a bit tired; I didn't want to go through all of that.

The last time I had to leave, LaLiga had also accepted my registration, but in the end, it couldn't be done. Well, I was afraid that the same thing would happen again, and I would have to rush around like before when I had to come here to Paris and stay in a hotel for a long time with my family, with my children going to school and still being in the hotel.

I wanted to make my own decision, and that's why my return to Barça didn't happen. Although I would have loved to, it couldn't be done. I'm at a point where I want to step out of the spotlight a bit, think more about my family. I had two years where I was so unhappy on a personal level that I didn't enjoy it. I had that month that was spectacular for me because of winning the World Cup, but apart from that, it was a difficult period for me. I want to rediscover joy, enjoy my family, my children, the day-to-day... And that's why the decision for Barcelona didn't happen.

When asked if he would still like to make a return to Barcelona, he revealed:

Yes, undoubtedly, I would like to maintain proximity to the club. In fact, my family and I plan to reside in Barcelona. It is a mutual understanding we hold dear. Hopefully, I cannot ascertain when or in what capacity, but I fervently hope that someday I can offer my assistance and support to the club I hold dear, as I have consistently emphasized. The unwavering affection I received from the fans throughout my career leaves me indebted, and I long to be part of this institution once more.
