    Who is Rema?

    Divine Ikubor, known professionally as Rema, is a Nigerian singer and rapper. In 2019, he signed a record deal with Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Mavin Records. His first song Dumebi, made airwaves and topped several music charts in Africa. He rose to prominence with the release of the song "Iron Man", which appeared on Barack Obama's 2019 summer playlist.

    Early Life

    Rema's early life was shaped by his Edo heritage and the vibrant culture of Benin City. He was born to his father, Justice Ikubor, and Mrs. Ikubor.  He had three siblings, two sisters and his late elder brother.

    He attended the Ighile Group of Schools and later pursued his tertiary education at the University of Lagos. Rema's family background has played a significant role in his musical journey, as he draws inspiration from his Bini roots and the rich cultural traditions of his people.

    The Bini tribe, to which Rema belongs, is one of the most prominent ethnic groups in Nigeria. The Bini people are known for their rich cultural heritage, including their art, music, and language. Rema's music often incorporates elements of Bini culture, such as the use of traditional instruments and rhythms, which adds a unique flavor to his sound.

    Musical Career

    Rema grew up singing and rapping while in secondary school. He attained his primary and secondary school education in Edo State.

    Rema's entry into the music industry was marked by his signing with Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Mavin Records. He then released his debut single, Dumebi. 

    Since then, he has released several hit singles, including Iron Man, Lady, and Ginger Me, which have earned him critical acclaim. Rema's music blends elements of Afrobeats, R&B, and trap, creating a sound that is fresh and familiar.

    In 2013, Rema and his friend Alpha P formed a group called RnA. The group's name is a combination of the first letters of their stage names. RnA won season 2 of Pikolo's Dream Alive talent show. They signed a record deal with Peak Entertainment shortly afterward and released their debut single "Mercy". The mid-tempo song was recorded at Dream Alive Studio in Benin City. The music video for "Mercy" was directed by Whyte House Pictures. The group gained minor exposure following their performance at the Glo Slide and Bounce concert series in Benin and Lagos. Rema signed a record deal with Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Mavin Records. He released his eponymous debut EP Rema in 2019. It peaked at number 1 on Apple Music Nigeria.

    On 19 October 2019, Rema won Headies' Next Rated Award and was nominated for Viewer's Choice Award at the 13th edition of The Headies.
