World Cup Qualifier: Super Eagles Maintain Top Spot with Victory over Liberia
Goals from Victor Osimhen and Ahmed Musa in both halves of the game ensured Nigeria beat Liberia to maintain the top spot in Group C of the FIFA World Cup qualifying match.
The Nigerian team dominated the game from the blast of the whistle by the center referee of the game. The pressure finally paid off in the 15th minute when Leicester City striker, Kelechi Iheanacho, was fouled in the box by Liberia's goalkeeper.
The referee gave the penalty, Osimhen sent the keeper the wrong way to put Nigeria ahead. Nigeria pushed for more goals in the first half but they could not find the back of the net.
The Super Eagles dominated the second half, the same way they did with the first, but they still could not find the net. Nigeria's second goal came towards the end of the game when Victor Osimhen was fouled in the box and Ahmed Musa scored from the spot to extend the lead.
Nigeria kept pushing for that elusive second goal to secure the win but it didn't come until in the added time when Liberian goalkeeper gifted Nigeria another penalty. It was Osimhen this time who he fouled in the box.
Substitute Musa, who became Nigeria's most capped player after he came on late on, stepped up this time to calmly slot home and seal the win and points.
The group is all to play for when Nigeria plays Cape Verde on Tuesday, November 16th, 2021 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos. Nigeria needs to avoid defeat to advance to the next stage of the qualifier while Cape Verde needs to win to top the Group.
