Victor Osimhen bags prestigious award in Italy

Super Eagles and Napoli forward player, Victor Osimhen has been named the best player in the Serie A.

The Italian Footballers’ Association Footballer of the Year named the Nigerian international the best player for the just concluded 2022/23 football season. The Nigerian was a key part of Napoli's success last season which saw them clinch the Serie A title for the first time in 33 years.

Victor Osimhen and his teammates won various awards during the ceremony which was held on Monday, December 4, 2023. The prestigious award had previously been won by the likes of Rafael Leao, Gianluigi Buffon, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Osimhen was selected as the winner of the award due to his goalscoring contributions, as he scored 26 times during 32 Serie A appearances. The Nigerian performance also saw him nominated for various awards, which include the FIFA Best, the CAF award and the Balon d’Or.

He was also included in the Serie team of the year alongside Mike Maignan, Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Kim Min-jae, Andrea Bastoni, Theo Hernández, Stanislav Lobotka, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Nicolo Barella, Rafael Leão, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
