Odegaard was speaking in an interview with Football 365 on Wednesday, August 3rd, 2022. The 23-year-old was named the captain of the Gunners before the final pre-season game of the club which was against Sevilla.

For this club and all the players, I feel it has been important to connect to understand them and to maybe be more open. We want the best for the club, we want to win every game and we need their support. Last year was brilliant in the stadium and I think they helped us a lot.

The club's former player, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang was stripped of the captain's armband in January 2022 before he left for Barcelona. Alexander Lacazette who took the responsibility has also left the club to rejoin Olympique Lyon.

The 23-year-old has made a huge impact since arriving at Emirates Stadium from Real Madrid in January 2021, initially on loan, and has gone on to play 60 times, scoring nine goals.
