Bayern Munich prolific striker Robert Lewandowski has reacted to Lionel Messi's statement as regards being given the 2020 Ballon d'or trophy.

Lionel Messi, who nabbed the 2021 Best Player in the World award for an historic seventh time, suggested that the organisers of the award should honour Lewandowski with the 2020 Ballon d'Or award he missed due to the pandemic. In his acceptance speech for the 2021 Ballon d'Or, Messi said:

I would like to mention Robert Lewandowski, it’s been a real honour to compete with you.

Everyone knows and we agree that you were the winner last year.

I think France Football should award you your 2020 Ballon d’Or - you deserve it and you should have it at home.

Recall that the goal poacher had an excellent season in 2020, but due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the award was cancelled, denying Lewandowski a chance to be named the best player in the world as he was an obvious favourite.

Following Messi's comment on the 2020 award, Lewandowski has responded to it, stating that he hopes Messi's comments are genuine and not that the Argentine is merely playing up to the cameras after many questions surrounded Messi's recent win. Lewandowski said:

I'm not that enthusiastic about getting the 2020 award.

I would like it [Messi's statement] to be a sincere and courteous statement from a great player and not just empty words.
