Southgate was speaking at a press conference after the game against the Germans. According to the Englishman, the squad is richly blessed with four right-backs and the players he played ahead of Trent have been in fantastic form this season.

I mean, we have got a big squad with us and we’ve got four right-backs who are super quality. At the moment Kieran Trippier is playing exceptionally well and Reece James has been one of the outstanding players in the Premier League at the start of the season. But Trent is a very, very good footballer and that’s why we picked him in the [initial] squad.

The 23-year-old did not start in the two UEFA Nations League games against Italy and Germany. However, the Liverpool player has been the shadow of himself since the beginning of this football season.
