R. Kelly hospitalized after alleged medication overdose in prison

R&B star R. Kelly was reportedly hospitalized last week after allegedly being given an overdose of medication by staff at his federal prison in North Carolina, according to new court documents filed by his attorney.

In the filing submitted Monday, Kelly’s lawyer, Beau B. Brindley, claimed that a solitary confinement officer instructed the singer to take extra medication on the night of June 12, 2025. The following morning, Kelly reportedly woke up feeling faint and dizzy. While attempting to get out of bed, he collapsed, crawled to the door of his cell, and lost consciousness.

Kelly was rushed to Duke University Hospital, where, according to his attorney, doctors told him he had been given a dangerously high dose of his prescribed medication, an amount that could have been fatal.

While he was hospitalized for two days, R. Kelly also alleged that he was informed of serious blood clots in his legs and lungs. However, his attorney claims that prison officials denied him a recommended surgery and abruptly removed him from the hospital against medical advice, returning him to solitary confinement.

Kelly’s legal team argues that his life remains in jeopardy and is again asking the court for a temporary release to home confinement, warning that without proper medical attention, the singer’s condition could turn fatal.

Prosecutors have dismissed the claims as part of a pattern, accusing Kelly of manipulating public perception and court proceedings. They noted that his motion was submitted to a court with no jurisdiction over his case and labeled the filing an attempt to gain sympathy and attention.

This incident follows earlier allegations from Kelly’s lawyers of an alleged murder plot against him within the prison, involving members of the Aryan Brotherhood gang. Kelly, who is currently serving a 30-year sentence for racketeering and sex trafficking convictions, maintains he is being targeted behind bars and denied essential care.
