Album Review: Wizkid - Ayo

Wizkid Ayo Cover Art  Artist: Wizkid

  Album Title: Ayo

  Label: Empire Mates Entertainment

  Release Date: September 17, 2014

Last week saw the early release of Wizkid’s anticipated sophomore album; a 19 track release, a third of which consists of songs that have been out for at least a quarter. Most listeners would have heard those songs before, as such they interrupt the intended flow of the album.

Show You The Money, (a track that sees Wizkid’s best delivery for a while), is followed by In My Bed. The second half of this song sounds exactly like the aforementioned track, down to the melody he uses. Mummy Mi is a decent track on its own, but dude drops a line to his mother on almost every other song on the album. Ojuelegba is the standout track on the album, a chilled mid-tempo production by Star Boy’s in-house duo, Legendury Beatz. This track is a delight, it samples Leon Haywood’s I want a Do Something Freaky To You, a joint first sampled on Nuthin But A G Thang by Dre, which serves to make it more appealing, I’ll be playing this song for a while. Kind of Love follows, this song is plagued by the same issue others are, lazy song writing, the melody is pleasing enough but if only more effort was put into crafting the song in its entirety.

The second third of the album has only one pre released track, On Top Your Matter, this song was sweet when it was released at the top of the year, it remains so. Seyi Shay and Akon are featured on different tracks, on both songs Wizkid was underwhelming, on In Love, he could not match the vocal playfulness of Seyi Shay nor could he rise to Akon’s easy delivery on For You; that said, For You is a song I’ll be playing again. Akon’s turn on this track is worth whatever he was paid.

Dutty Whine feat. Bank W. This song is terrible, there may be a chance that it bangs in the club because when the Remy’s in the system every song sounds great, but in the cold light of day, this song is really bad. The next track, Ki Lo Fe, I skipped too, it left so much to be desired. Omalicha, another lazy song, skip. Bombay Feat. Phyno, it’s alright as club songs go. One question feat. Yemi Sax is lovely; the kinda song that makes the sun not as hot as it feels. I also like Celebrate. After this song, Joy is the next track worth checking out; yet another ode to his mother, on its own, no problem but on an album where Mama Ayo is shouted out at least 6 times, with 2 songs dedicated to her, it’s a little much. The foreign collaborations, Akon aside, did nothing to enhance the tracks they were on. Tyga and Wale both phoned in their verses; nothing remotely memorable here.

The glaring thing here is that there is no overarching theme for the album. The choice of songs and their arrangement is not what one would expect; too many songs sound the same or like they belong on a giveaway project.

There is hardly anything of the man Wizkid on this album. The art is bland, its delivery largely  pro forma, repetitive lyrics, unimaginative riffs, etcetera.  Ojuelegba is hot because it marries a soothing mid tempo beat with a glimpse of his backstory, same goes for Ayo. If longevity is a concern of the artist’s then his pen game needs to improve markedly. It’s not enough to make club bangers where the beat makes up for his lyrics’ deficiencies. An album is supposed to be versatile art that lends itself to moods and situations; that cannot be said of this work.

Of the fresh material, only three songs are compelling enough to warrant revisiting: Ojuelegba, For You and Celebrate. The album relies too heavily on the familiarity of the old joints to prop it up, as such it falls way short.

This album is rated 4.5 out of 10.

I have been waiting for album reviews on notjustok for a while. To be very sincere, the person who did this review was spot on with this closing sentence "The album relies too heavily on the familiarity of the old joints to prop it up, as such it falls way short."
Well done, looking forward to more reviews with no sentiments.

4.5/10? That's a failing grade naa. It surely wasn't that bad. The album felt monotonous but tracks like Ojuelegba, Joy and Show you the money definitely elevated it to the C+/B- range.

Mr. Reviewer, whatever your name is, go and chill. Giving Wizzy's album 4.5 out of 10? Are you serious? If you know what it means to compose, write, record, mix & master every song, the amount of efforts it must have took him to arrange everything you wouldn't be giving him that rating. Music is not easy, i'm not siding wizkid but you got to take into account that the dude is trying to be as diverse as he can be. And its non of your business if he chooses to dedicate his songs to his mother!! Wizzy keep doing… Read more »

Oga go sit down. The album is so below the people expectation. I was surprised the way people hyped it when it came until I listen to it my self. He didn't released any album for almost 4 years now the least he could have done is to give people something nice. If he isn't capable of doing albums let him sticks to singles! So to me I will still rate it the same 4.5/10 but as a professional musician giving out shit like this I will rate it 2.2/10

nigga! calm down! You do not have to know what it takes to make music or etc etc to be able to critique it! You watch football abi? You cannot and donot know what ronaldo or messi hjave to go through to be on the field, or the amount of training and work that goes into it, yet you critique and talk about their performances, abi? This is a constructive review, however it has some positive and negatives. Regardless of the number of "Old Jams" or "Pre released Jams", those songs are still a part of the album. Those songs (Singles) are released way ahead of time of the album to serve as advertisement for the album and thus can't be discounted. Hits from the Album: - Jaiye Jaiye - Show you the money - In my Bed - Ojuelegba - On top your matter - For You - Bombay - Joy - Celebrate - Caro The negatives from this album is maybe an improvement in… Read more »

Finally, speaking the truth. I am glad they have finally done this. Notjustok reviews can actually affect the trajectory of the Nigerian music industry. Artist need to see that thier audience aren't stoopid and will call you out when you put out a mediocre project. For those who think otherwise please go listen to Danny kranes album. He is able to tackle different subject matters and delivers with meaningful lyrics. Lastly, for those people who are like "go and make our own album". NJO has a way of adding gallons of petrol to fire without being the petrol seller or attendant. You could have avoided posting this review from an unqualified 'reviewer' but you decided to post. What certification or pedigree does this person have to review a song? Does the person even play any instrument or knows what it means to sing on key? I have listened to the album and as much as I won't say it is Wizkid's best work yet, I will not berate his efforts. Dorobucci is a hit. But any musical reviewer worth his salt will tell you its a poor and lazy song made strictly for the radio/club. Imagine if ASA made dorobucci. it wont pass the front desk of her record label reception. As much as i disagree with some of the reviewer's opinions, he hits the Nail on the head.

First, this is not a review, but the mumbo-jumbo of someone in a rush to deliver quickly and get paid for doing 'maximum havoc'. It has no depth, no real analysis. the tracks in the album all jumbled together. A good review will take the tracks one by one and give it a punch-by punch in-depth look - the lyrics, production, artistic value etc - not this dismissive rubbish. There's no doubting the fact that the faceless author is completely unqualified. On the other hand, this is one of the best albums in town right now, check proper review somewhere… Read more »

Very True. I honestly feel that he just fulfilled his contract obligations to EME. I hope he actually saved the good stuff for his label album. When you look at the tracks he has released with his label producers ( Legendary Beatz) They sound way better than the crap that he released calling an actual album. Wizkid need to start actually working at releasing quality material and not telling fans during interviews that he is always working hard in the studio on repeating the same crap. After checking out who the reviewer is, i can say - she has no business reviewing albums. Then again, reviews are really nothing more than opinions with a different name tag.

I am sick of hearing people criticize albums or songs with empty lyrical content and poor artistic composition. NOT because i support mediocrity.. oh, not at all.

BUT BECAUSE THESE SAME DUMBF**KS DO NOT buy, promote, review or even support artists who put in a lot of work into their craft e.g GT da Guitarman and other such artists who are true musicians.
