5 talking points from Liverpool 1-2 Manchester City

SHARE

Liverpool vs Manchester City is always one of the most anticipated Premier League fixtures when the draws are announced before the start of every season in England.

However, this last season has been a sharp contrast from what the fixture used to be like when Jurgen Klopp was in charge of Liverpool. The game was beyond what went on the pitch but also on the touchline with Klopp and Pep Guardiola dishing out instructions to their players.

The Cityzens were looking to do a double over Liverpool for the first time since the 1936/37 season following their first leg victory earlier in the season.

Liverpool came into this game in sixth position behind Manchester United and Chelsea who both occupy the fifth and sixth places respectively. On the other hand, Manchester City occupy second place behind League leaders Arsenal with nine points and are on the same number of points as Aston Villa in third place.

Here are the five talking points from Liverpool vs Manchester City

(1) Marc Guehi:

The English defender joined Manchester City during the January 2026 summer transfer window and has been a huge addition to the squad since he arrived from Crystal Palace.

Guehi was a huge wall that blocked every potential attack that Liverpool threw at the Premier League Champions.

(2) Manchester City’s wasted opportunities:

This was the same story when Manchester City faced Tottenham Hotspur in their⁰⁹ last game as they failed to kill off the game earlier before Dominic Solanke stole a point in their last Premier League game. City has been wasteful in front of the goal for the better part of this season.

(3) Erling Haaland: The Norwegian international has failed to score in his last three league games at Anfield. He has also been in very poor form since the beginning of this season, which is the same as most of the players in the City team. However, he broke that jinx with his penalty, which was enough to earn Manchester City the maximum points as they remain in touching distance of Arsenal.

(4) Pep Guardiola:

The future of Pep Guardiola will continue to be a big concern for the directors at Manchester City despite the victory. They will be considering if he should be in charge of the club going into the 2026/27 season which is also the final year of his contract.

(5) Premier League title: This is another weekend where everything remains as it was before this game week and a step forward in their Premier League title.. The Gunners are still six points ahead of Manchester City as the season progresses into its crucial stage.
