The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed a suspension to Cameroon football legend Samuel Eto’o, following an incident during the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Eto’o, who currently serves as the President of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), has been sanctioned for conduct deemed inappropriate by CAF’s disciplinary committee.

Why did CAF suspend Samuel Eto’o?

The decision stems from events that occurred during Cameroon’s quarter-final match at the tournament, where Eto’o was accused of reacting angrily to refereeing decisions.According to CAF, his behavior breached the principles of fair play and sportsmanship expected from senior football officials, particularly in a high-profile competition like AFCON.

The decision has seen Eto’o has been banned for four matches, meaning he will be unable to attend or take part in official CAF matches involving Cameroon during that period.

In addition to the suspension, CAF also imposed a financial fine, further underlining the seriousness of the offence.
FECAFOOT has since expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict, describing the punishment as excessive and unfair.

The Cameroonian federation has indicated that it is considering an appeal against the decision, insisting that Eto’o’s actions were misinterpreted and did not warrant such a sanction. The suspension adds to a growing list of controversies surrounding Eto’o’s tenure as FECAFOOT president.

While he remains one of Africa’s most celebrated footballers, his leadership role has often placed him under intense scrutiny, with this latest development once again putting him at the center of CAF disciplinary action. CAF, however, has reiterated its commitment to maintaining discipline and respect for match officials, stressing that no individual is above the rules, regardless of status or legacy.
