'I think a lot of people don’t like me,' says Mr Eazi

Renowned Nigerian Afrobeats singer Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade, popularly known as Mr Eazi, has opened up about the challenges he faces with public perception and the distinctive elements that set him apart from other artists.

In a recent interview, the 32-year-old artist candidly addressed the issue, stating, "I think a lot of people don’t like me. I used to have a problem with that, but now I don’t anymore." He shed light on the disapproval he experiences both within and outside the music industry, emphasising how people sometimes feel entitled to influence his life decisions.

Mr Eazi highlighted the high expectations placed on him, explaining that people anticipate him to go above and beyond, extending beyond the realm of music collaborations. The producer expressed irony in the fact that those who harbour dislike him often struggle to articulate specific reasons for their sentiments. He attributed the negative perception to his non-mainstream and non-mediocre celebrity status, as well as his preference for a more solitary lifestyle.

"When I ask them, they can’t articulate, they have no evidence. So, I just see maybe because I’m weird or I’m a loner and love doing things alone," Mr Eazi shared. He observed that his posts sometimes attract unwarranted criticism, unlike certain blogs that question narratives, leading him to believe that some may think he doesn't deserve the attention.

In response to the negative sentiment, Mr Eazi conveyed a message to his detractors: "Don't hate me, hate my maker." He emphasized that the success and blessings he receives are not solely due to his efforts but are akin to the "oil on his head," attributing the grace in his life to a higher power.

This revelation comes two months after Mr Eazi shared his struggles with finding fulfilment as a musician, contemplating quitting the industry following his 2019 Coachella performance.

Despite achieving remarkable success and performing at the prestigious international music show within three years of entering the music scene, Mr Eazi faced a period of questioning and self-doubt.
