Lagos-based independent musician, ZahZah, has released the effortless video for “Miss You,” his latest single.
First released in August 2020, “Miss You,” produced by Phantom, is a bluesy love song built around minimal drum patterns and prominent guitar riffs.
The video for “Miss You” takes its cue from the song’s simple effervescence, choosing a series of artsy room and outdoor shots to compliment ZahZah’s natural sonic eloquence. The colours are warm and in sync throughout the video, leaving no part of this visual interpretation to chance.
“It was a sweet experience because we had the entire concept mapped out, with my love interest and I,” says ZahZah about making the video. “But the director (The Alien) came up with specific parts of the shoot; he was superb with that. There were technical issues — weather too — and we had to reschedule, but it ultimately came out nice.”
At different times across the video, The Alien used his lenses to focus on the granular elements of the set and brings a newer focus on how seemingly random moments can create a flush visual effort.
“I always set out to evoke the emotions from any song’s title and lyrical content,” The Alien says about the video. “We wanted to visually tell a story about two lovers who lost their connection in the relationship, and juxtaposing this with them in their current state, remembering the good times they’ve had while trying to rekindle their love.”
“It was also very crucial that the video was aesthetically pleasing with beautiful cinematography and that is exactly the energy every department I worked with brought in to make the visuals the way it is.”
Since starting music professionally four years ago, ZahZah has been on a steady and consistent rise that does not show a sign of letting up, the computer engineering graduate’s music is a reflection of the R&B and afrobeats sound that formed a lot of his music education as a child.
As part of a generation of young musicians furthering the spread of Nigerian pop, ZahZah is acutely aware of the power of his voice in telling stories about the joys and struggles of being in love and his previous releases (“Sundown,” “Feelings, and “Balance It”) have shown him on the path of finding a suitable pocket of sound for himself.
ZahZah is currently at work on his first body of work, scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2021.
