We have also analyzed the deal from the standpoint of Victor Osimhen being arguably one of the biggest football stars in Africa and we have seen more negatives than positives if he eventually considers the move.

Is Victor Osimhen's future loan deal to Chelsea a bad idea?

From our perspective, a loan deal for Victor Osimhen to Chelsea is likely to be a bad move for the Nigerian international given what he represents and how he's perceived at the moment.

Why is this a bad move for Victor Osimhen?

Here are 3 key reasons as to why this is poised to be a bad move for the Nigerian international if he considers joining Chelsea on loan for a year.

  • Decreased market value

At the moment Victor Osimhen has an estimated value of 100 million euros which is currently one of the highest market values for footballers in Europe today. Such a market value is placed based on the demand of the player in the transfer market. If Victor Osimhen should consider the loan move to Chelsea it is expected that this market value drops as such reducing his value as a player in the transfer window market.

It is rare to see a player of such calibre consider a loan move as opposed to an outright sale. A classical example of this can be seen with Lukaku. When Lukaku rejoined Chelsea in August 2021, his market value was approximately €100 million. However, due to inconsistent performances and injuries, his value dropped significantly to around €55 million by the end of 2022.

Lukaku’s loan spells at Inter Milan and AS Roma had varied impacts on his market value. During his loan to Inter Milan in the 2022-2023 season, his market value further decreased to about €70 million. Following his loan to AS Roma in the 2023-2024 season, his market value plummeted to approximately €32 million.

  • Difficulty in securing a good transfer move after loan spell

The rumoured deal which involves Chelsea and Napoli has revealed that there is no mandated option to buy but rather consider buying.

This can become a major problem for Victor Osimhen if Chelsea reaches a final conclusion to not buy him after the loan move. Osimhen might struggle with finding a new club if the option to sign is not activated by Chelsea in the next transfer window.

A classical example is the case of Romelu Lukaku who has gone on 2 different loan spells since he completed a record-breaking move to Chelsea under the Roman Abramovich administration, till date Lukaku has still not managed to secure a buyout move from Chelsea even with a price tag of 50 million euros.

Another example is Joao Felix who has also failed to secure a buy move from Atletico Madrid with a price tag as low as 50 million euros.

  • Missing out on top-flight football

As the race for the Ballon d'Or heats up, Victor Osimhen, one of the highest-ranked African footballers, may risk losing his top spot if he doesn't get to play in top-flight competitions like the Champions League.

Chelsea will be playing in the UEFA Europa Conference League, and a talented player like Osimhen needs to compete at that level. Osimhen is hoping to improve upon his 8th place finish in the last Ballon d'Or rankings.
