Why Harry Maguire received a suspended prison sentence

Man United defender Harry Maguire has been handed a 15-months suspended prison sentence by a court in Greece.
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been handed a 15-month suspended prison sentence by a Greek court following a long-delayed retrial on the island of Syros.
The verdict, delivered on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, finds the 32-year-old guilty of non-serious assault, resisting arrest, and attempted bribery.
The charges stem from an August 2020 incident on the island of Mykonos, where Maguire was arrested following an altercation outside a bar while on holiday with his family.
The 15-month term marks a reduction from the original 21-month suspended sentence handed down in 2020.
Because the sentence is suspended, the England international will not serve any jail time provided he does not commit further offenses.
Maguire has consistently maintained his innocence throughout the nearly six-year legal saga, claiming the incident began when he attempted to protect his sister, whom he believed had been injected with a "date-rape drug" by two men.
Maguire was not present in the courtroom for the ruling, as he remained in the United Kingdom preparing for Manchester United’s Premier League fixture against Newcastle United.
His legal team has already confirmed that they will appeal the conviction to the Greek Supreme Court.
Under Greek law, this appeal will effectively freeze the current judgment until the higher court reviews the case, continuing the player's quest to fully clear his name.
