Why did Manchester United Sign Mason Mount?


Manchester United Football Club confirmed the signing of Mason Mount from Chelsea, the midfielder is the first player that will join the Red Devils ahead of the 2023/24 season.

There have been questions by football fans around the world asking why the Manchester Club decided to sign the English man amongst the other players ( Ilkay Gundogan, Moises Caicedo, Declan Rice) that are available.

What transpired between Chelsea and Mason Mount?

There were a lot of issues between both parties which were reported by different sections of the media. However, the main issue which saw things fall apart was Chelsea's stance over wages and contract length which did not sit well with Mount. According to reports, Mount's current salary is lower than most of the top Chelsea players and he also wanted assurances that he will get more playing time when the new season (2023/24) begins.

The manager of the Red Devils, Erik Ten has always wanted a mobile No 8 who can add attacking edge and defensive nous, and he sees Mount as a modern midfielder, who is good on and off the ball. This was the reason why United's recruitment team decided to bring in the 24-year-old because he suits what Ten Hag wants.

Mason Mount completed his £55m transfer from Chelsea to Manchester United to become Erik ten Hag's first summer signing, He signed a five-year deal with the club which means he will be a Red Devil until at least 2028 with an option to extend by a year.

The 24-year-old midfielder has made 279 club appearances, scoring 58 goals and contributing 53 assists. He was Chelsea’s Player of the Year for both the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons.
