Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone has confirmed that Julián Álvarez will return to the matchday squad for Saturday’s LaLiga clash against Athletic Club at San Mamés.

The Argentine forward missed Atlético’s previous match against Sevilla after suffering an illness and being absent from several training sessions. However, Álvarez has now returned to full training and is back in contention.

What did Simeone say about Álvarez's inclusion?

“Julián is training very well. Tomorrow he will be called up and will be part of the group travelling to Bilbao."

The confirmation comes after a turbulent period surrounding Álvarez’s future, with Barcelona pushing for his signing before the transfer window closed. Atlético ultimately kept the striker, meaning he will continue his career in Madrid.

Simeone believes the situation can become a learning experience for Álvarez, describing it as an opportunity for the player to move forward and respond on the pitch. He also made it clear that he wants to see the forward happy and scoring goals for Atlético.

However, being included in the squad does not necessarily mean Álvarez will start against Athletic Club. Reports suggest he could begin on the bench as Simeone considers maintaining the team that defeated Sevilla.
