James came into the game needing just 36 to overhaul the record. He achieved this feat in the early hours of Wednesday, February 8th, 2023 taking his total points to 38,388, breaking the record held by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's total points tally of 38,387.

He scored 20 points in the first half with a showing of his offensive talent which he has done consistently in the past two decades. James hit the 16-point third quarter with a beautiful jump with 10.9 seconds left in the third quarter.

James expressed his delight to the crowd after he broke the record.

I thank you guys so much for allowing me to be a part of something I've always dreamed about. I would never in a million years dreamt of this being even better than what it is tonight.

The officials decided to stop the game for about 10 minutes as members of James' family, including his mother, his wife, and their three children, could join in the celebration on the floor.
