Lionel Messi showed the world why he is considered one of the greatest footballers of all time in the history of the sport.

The Argentine international sent a message to the world when he scored a fantastic goal in his debut for Inter Miami on Saturday, July 22, 2023. Lionel Messi scored the goal in the fourth minute of added time as his team won the Leagues Cup game 2-1 against Mexican side Cruz Azul.

The Leagues Cup is an annual tournament between MLS and Liga MX, it was expanded this year to include all teams in each league.

The seven-time Ballon D'or winner expressed his delight on Apple TV after the game.

"What I saw was the goal. I saw the goal, I knew that I had to score. It was the last play of the game and I wanted to score so we didn’t go to penalties. So it was very important for us to get this win because it’s a new tournament this is going to give us confidence moving forward.”

The 20,000-capacity crowd included celebrities such as basketball's LeBron James, tennis legend Serena Williams and US TV star Kim Kardashian.

The 36-year-old has not has not had enough time to train with his team-mates having just trained for the first time on Tuesday after moving to the MLS following the end of his contract at Paris St-Germain. Messi scored 32 goals in 75 games during two years with the French champions and will hope he can score more goals for Inter Miami.
