Virgil Van Dijk Extends Contract with Liverpool
Liverpool's defender, Virgil van Dijk, has extended his contract with the Reds. The Dutch signed the new contract on Friday, August 13th, 2021, which will keep him at the club until June 2025.
This contract extension makes him the fourth first-team player to extend their contract this transfer window. The contract extension was announced on Liverpool's website. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, and Alisson Becker all renewed their contracts last month.
Van Dijk has not played competitive football since October 2020, after he got injured in a game between Liverpool and Everton. The injury made the defender suffer an anterior cruciate knee ligament injury, which ruled him out of the season.
The Dutch defender could not represent the Netherlands in the just concluded Euro 2020 because of the injury. Liverpool fans will hope the defender picks up his form immediately as the new season starts.
Van Dijk is the most expensive player in the history of Liverpool. They signed him for 75 million pounds from Southampton in January 2018. He has made 130 appearances for the Reds, inspiring them to Champions League and Premier League titles in 2019 and 2020, respectively.
