Victor Osimhen wins African player of the year award

Super Eagles and Napoli's forward player, Victor Osimhen has been named the winner of the 2023 African player of the year award.

The Nigerian international was named the winner at the award ceremony which was hosted in Morocco on Monday, December 11, 2023. Victor Osimhen is the first Nigerian to win the award since Kanu Nwankwo won it in 1999.

The forward player led Napoli to win the Scudetto for the first time in 33 years last season (2023/24), with 26 goals 26 in 32 league outings.

The 24-year-old also scored five more goals in the UEFA Champions League with Napoli exiting the competition in the quarter-finals. He was also the top scorer in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with 10 goals.

Osimhen beat Mohamed Salah and Achraf Hakimi who play for Liverpool and Paris Saint Germain respectively. Salah helped Liverpool qualify for the Europa League despite the team's poor form, while Hakimi was a part of the Moroccan team that qualified for the semifinal of the World Cup.
