USA vs Uruguay highlights: USA knocked out from Copa America

The hope of the United States of America ( USA) winning the 2024 Copa America was dashed when they lost 1-0 in their final group game vs Uruguay which was played on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

The USA came into the game with the hope of avoiding a defeat to at least stand a chance of reaching the quarter-finals of the competiton. However, the USA vs Uruguay will forever be seen in the eyes of Americans as a match were the referee was the major highlight due his bad officiating.

The USA started the game with intent as they were not ready to let go of any loose ball and were also able to break through Uruguay's defense line. In the 13th minute, Reyna hit a cross that goalkeeper Sergio Rochet snatched just before it reached U.S. striker Folarin Balogun, and defender Antonee Robinson put a header on target.

The only goal of the game came in the 66th minute when Mathías Olivera netted a controversial goal from a set piece which was enough to see Uruguay go top of the group and knock out USA from this year's 2024 Copa America.

The USA finished Group C play on three points (1W-2L-0D) and in third place, behind both Uruguay (3W-0L-0D; 9 pts.) and Panama (2-W-1L-0D). Only the top two sides in the group were guaranteed a spot in the quarterfinals.

This is the first time that the U.S. men's national team was eliminated from the group stage of a major tournament after winning its first game. It was also the first time the USMNT was eliminated from the group stage of a major tournament hosted on home soil.
