Uruguay FA Confirm Marcelo Bielsa as its New Head Coach

The former manager of Leeds United, Marcelo Bielsa has been confirmed as the head coach of the Uruguayan Men's national team.

The news was confirmed by the Uruguay Football Association on Monday, May 15th, 2023. He succeeds Diego Alonso, whose contract expired after Uruguay’s group-stage exit from the 2022 World Cup.

The 67-year-old will be coming into the South American team with a wealth of experience that he has gotten from his time at other teams he has managed in the past.

Bielsa as initially linked with a move to Everton about a potential return to the Premier League, however, he decided to take the Uruguay job which is his third move into international management. He managed Argentina between 1998 and 2004 and led Chile between 2007 and 2011.

He was in Europe for 8 years at 4 different clubs (Athletic Club, Marseille, Lille, Leeds) before moving back to South America.
