South African Court grants Oscar Pistorius early release from Prison

The South African Department of Correctional Service has confirmed that former Paralympian Champion, Oscar Pistorius will be released from prison on January 15, 2024.

The athlete will get his freedom nearly 11 years after he was found guilty of murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Oscar Pistorius shot her multiple times in his home on Valentine's Day in 2013, he claimed that he believed that a burglar had come into his house, hence his decision to shoot the person multiple times.

The 37-year-old was sentenced by a South African court to 13 years and five months in prison. This was Pistorius' second parole hearing in under a year, his first parole bid was struck out in March 2023 because he had not completed the minimum detention period.

It was later ruled a mistake by South Africa's Constitutional Court, at the parole hearing on Friday, November 24, 2023. He was initially told that he was eligible for parole in August 2024 when he was initially eligible for March 2023.
