The African Cup of Nations (AFCON) is one of the most important football tournaments in Africa, featuring the best teams from across the continent. Nigeria has a rich history in the competition, having won the tournament three times and finishing as runners-up four times.

With the silver medal they received at the 2023 edition of the tournament, Nigeria has extended its record as the most successful team in AFCON history. The Super Eagles have now won a total of 15 medals, consisting of 3 gold, 4 silver, and 8 bronze, which is more than any other African country.

Egypt is the second most successful team in the competition with 13 medals, while Ghana is in third place with 10 medals.

Highest goals scored by a defender at AFCON 2023

Super Eagles of Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong who was crowned player of the tournament at AFCON 2023, set a new record for the highest number of goals scored by a defender in the tournament's history surpassing the late Stephen Keshi who previously held the record with four goals in the tournament's history.

William Troost-Ekong now holds the record of the defender with the highest number of goals in the competition's history with a total of five goals. This record became William's following his impressive header which gave Nigeria the lead in the AFCON 2023 finals against Ivory Coast.

Best win record

Nigeria has the best win record at AFCON 2023, winning five games from the group stage to the knockout stage, with one draw against Equatorial Guinea in the group stage and a loss against Ivory Coast in the finals of the competition as well.

This was an impressive run for the Super Eagles as a team as they showed their resilience on the pitch and would be looking to turn the tides at AFCON 2025.
