Super Eagles of Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong who was crowned player of the tournament at AFCON 2023, set a new record for the highest number of goals scored by a defender in the tournament's history surpassing the late Stephen Keshi who previously held the record with four goals in the tournament's history.
William Troost-Ekong now holds the record of the defender with the highest number of goals in the competition's history with a total of five goals. This record became William's following his impressive header which gave Nigeria the lead in the AFCON 2023 finals against Ivory Coast.

Nigeria has the best win record at AFCON 2023, winning five games from the group stage to the knockout stage, with one draw against Equatorial Guinea in the group stage and a loss against Ivory Coast in the finals of the competition as well.
