Premier League hands Everton more points deduction

The English Premier League has announced that Everton Football Club has been given an additional two-point deduction for breaching the profitability and sustainability rule.

This is the second time this season (2023/24) that the Merseyside club has been punished as it relates to the three-year accounting period ending in the 2022-23 season. The points deduction was issued by an independent commission that the Premier League referred Everton to in January 2024.

The independent commission heard evidence and arguments from the club over a three-day hearing last month in respect of a range of potential mitigating factors for its admitted breach of £16.6 million, including the impact of its two successive PSR charges. After considering all the factors, the commission determined the appropriate sanction to be a two-point deduction, taking effect immediately. The Premier League statement read as follows:

"An independent commission has given an immediate two-point deduction to Everton FC for a breach of the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSRs) for the period ending season 2022/23. The commission reaffirmed the principle that any breach of the PSRs is significant and justifies, indeed requires, a sporting sanction.”

Everton was initially hit with a 10-point deduction in November 2023 for breaching the PSR breach relating to the three years ending in the 2021-22 season, which was later reduced to six points in February 2024.

Everton has dropped to 16th place on the table, two points off Nottingham Forest who are in 18th place. The club has until Friday, April 12, 2024, to appeal the decision.
