The body governing football in Africa CAF has reportedly decided to extend the date of AFCON 2025 to January 2026.

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, also referred to as AFCON 2025, is scheduled to be the 35th edition of the biennial African football tournament organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as was billed to take place in July and August 2025.

According to the reports coming from the CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, the biennial tournament has now been scheduled to take place in January 2026, so that it does not clash with the first edition of the new FIFA Club World cup . However, this is the third time that there will be a change in the date so it remains to be seen if CAF will change the date again.

What was the initial date for AFCON 2025?

The Morocco FA had initially announced that the competition would be played in June 2025. However, there were concerns from various stakeholders that the 2025 AFCON would clash with the FIFA Club World Cup which would also be played in June 2025.

There have been reports in the past from the camp of FIFA and CAF that both bodies have agreed in principle that the competition will be played from the middle of July to the middle of August. The reason for this is to allow players represent their various clubs in the competition.

Football lovers will have to wait for an official update from both parties to know when the competition will kick off.
