The decision to retire from the sport was announced on the website of the Australian Open on Wednesday, March 23rd, 2022. According to Barty, the decision was difficult for her but it was the right decision.

There’s not right way, there’s no wrong way, it’s just my way. And this is perfect for me, to share it with you, to talk to you about it, with my team, my loved ones, that I’ll be retiring from tennis. It’s the first time I’ve actually said it out loud, and yeah, it’s hard to say. But I’m so happy, and I’m so ready, and I just know at the moment in my heart, for me as a person, this is right.

She also appreciated everything that tennis has given her during her time on the court but she believes now is the right time to step away.

I know I’ve done this before, but in a very different feeling. And I’m so grateful to everything that tennis has given me; it’s given me all of my dreams, plus more. But I know that the time is right now for me to step away and chase other dreams, and yeah, to put the racquets down.

Barty won the Australian Open in January 2022 and she became the first local to win the singles slam in 44 years. She has 15 career titles to her name which includes three grand slam titles.
