Following the retirement of Ahmed Musa and William Troost-Ekong, the Super Eagles of Nigeria have announced a new captain ahead of AFCON 2025.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have named midfielder Wilfred Ndidi as their new team captain following the international retirement of Ahmed Musa and William Troost-Ekong.

Ndidi steps into the leadership role after previously wearing the armband on several occasions when both Musa and Troost-Ekong were unavailable. With the Kano Pillars forward and the Al Khoolood defender officially stepping away from international duty, the responsibility has now been permanently handed to the Besiktas midfielder.

Reacting to his appointment, Ndidi described the role as a major responsibility, expressing confidence that teamwork within the squad would ensure success.

“It’s a big task, but with the support of the players, I believe everything will go well,” he said.

Looking ahead to the Africa Cup of Nations and the team’s objectives, Ndidi stressed the importance of unity and communication within the squad.

“I’ve spoken with the players to help them understand why we are here. We also need strong backing from the coaching staff and open discussions about what lies ahead. It’s crucial that everyone is aligned,” he added.

Ndidi also paid tribute to former captain William Troost-Ekong, highlighting his leadership qualities and lasting influence on the team.

He’s an exceptional leader who always stood up for the team. His voice carried weight, and everyone respected him. I admire his confidence and commitment. I’ve learned so much from him, and even recently he shared advice with me. In many ways, he still feels like part of the squad, and he will definitely be missed.”
