Nigeria appoints Ex-NBA coach to lead D’Tigers

Former NBA head coach David Fizdale has officially been appointed as the new head coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D'Tigers.
The Nigeria Basketball Federation confirmed the appointment as part of its long-term plan to strengthen Nigerian basketball and compete consistently at the highest international level.
What experience will Fizdale bring to the D'Tigers?
Fizdale brings significant NBA experience to the role, having previously served as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks, while also winning two NBA championships as an assistant coach with the Miami Heat.
According to reports, Fizdale’s main objective will be guiding D’Tigers toward qualification for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

However D’Tigers still possess one of the strongest collections of basketball talent in Africa, with several players competing at the highest professional level in the NBA and Europe.
The arrival of David Fizdale is seen as an attempt to rebuild the team’s structure, improve consistency, and return Nigeria to major international competitions.
Nigeria is expected to begin that journey during the African qualifiers for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup later next year. The move has generated excitement among basketball fans because Nigeria could potentially assemble one of the strongest African squads ever, with several NBA players reportedly eligible or interested in representing the country,
