Man United appoint new coach following Ruben Amorim's sacking

The coach to serve as a replacement for Ruben Amorim, following his sacking, has been confirmed by Man United.
Man United have turned to familiar territory following the sacking of head coach Ruben Amorim, with former player and academy coach Darren Fletcher appointed as interim manager.
The Premier League club confirmed Amorim’s departure on Monday, January 5, 2025, ending his turbulent 14-month spell at Old Trafford. Fletcher will take immediate charge of the first team and lead United into their next fixture against Burnley on Wednesday.
In a club statement, United explained that the decision was made with the team currently sitting sixth in the Premier League, stressing that the change was aimed at improving their chances of securing the best possible league finish this season.
Fletcher, a former United midfielder who has worked closely with the club’s academy and backroom staff, is seen as a steady internal option to stabilise the squad during the transition period.
Amorim, who arrived from Sporting CP in November 2024 amid high expectations, recorded 24 wins in 63 matches and guided United to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao in May. However, his tenure was marked by inconsistency and growing tension behind the scenes.
His final game in charge ended in a 1-1 draw against Leeds United on Sunday, after which the Portuguese coach delivered a heated press conference, publicly expressing frustration with recruitment issues and insisting his role extended beyond coaching alone.
That outburst followed weeks of speculation surrounding internal disagreements over transfers and club structure. United’s hierarchy has now opted for change, placing Fletcher at the helm as the club looks to regroup and refocus.
Manchester United, who last won the Premier League in 2013 under Sir Alex Ferguson, will hope Fletcher’s interim leadership can bring renewed stability as they navigate another critical phase in their long rebuild.
