The Reds announced the news on its official website on Friday, May 17, 2024. According to reports from the club, Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara have decided to leave Liverpool to embark on a new chapter in their careers upon the expiry of their current contract with the Reds at the end of this current campaign.

What did Liverpool say about Thiago and Matip?

Liverpool appreciated the efforts that both players gave to the club during their time at Anfield.

The statement read,

"Thiago Alcantara's time with the Reds will come to an end this summer upon the expiration of his contract. A truly special player. Thank you for everything, Thiago."

The second post also read,

"Joel Matip will bid farewell to the Reds this summer after an eight-season spell during which he helped the club to some of its most memorable modern moments. Thank you for everything, Joel."

Former Spain international Thiago joined Liverpool from Bayern Munich in 2020 and made 98 appearances during his time at Anfield. On the other hand, Matip joined the Reds in 2016 from Schalke having played 201 games and scored 11 goals. The careers of both players have been hindered by injuries for most of the time that they spent at the club.

As for other players, the future of Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold is uncertain as they are yet to commit their future to the club by signing a contract extension. Liverpool fans already anticipated the exit of most of their key players following Jurgen Klopp's decision to leave Anfield at the end of this season.
