Here are the leagues in Europe that would receive five instead of four slots in the next season of the UEFA Champions League.

The new format of the UEFA Champions League ahead of the 2024/2025 season has continued to garner attention worldwide with reports of top leagues receiving additional slots in the tournament.

Many expect top leagues like the Premier League or the La Liga to receive more slots but as it stands reverse is the case and here are the leagues that would get five spots in the upcoming Champions League season based on the coefficient calculations.

In the previous edition of the Champions League top league earned four spots but the new format guarantees two of these top teams one slot extra each.

How does the extra slot in the Champions League work?

The objective is to determine the best average coefficient of all participating teams in Europe for each country. All clubs' points are summed up, and the resulting score is divided by the number of clubs a country has in Europe in a given season. This division gives the coefficient average. Here is how it would be done:

  1. An additional spot is awarded to the top two leagues with the highest score.
  2. A win earns two coefficient points, a draw earns one, and a loss earns nothing.
  3. In the event that a match goes into extra time, the score at the end of 120 minutes is considered.
  4. Penalties are not taken into account if the game ends in a tie, since they only determine the winner of the tie rather than the individual match.
  5. There are also extra points for reaching certain stages in the competition, which gives more recognition to teams that perform well in higher-profile competitions.

2. Germany, 16.357
3. England, 16.250
