José Mourinho reacts to the sacking of Ruben Amorim by Man United

José Mourinho, in his latest interview, has reacted to Man United's decision to sack Ruben Amorim from his role as head coach of the club
Former Man United manager José Mourinho has reacted to the club’s decision to sack Ruben Amorim, insisting that only the Portuguese coach himself truly understands why his spell at Old Trafford came to an end.
Speaking after Amorim’s dismissal following a turbulent 14-month tenure, Mourinho drew on his own experience of being fired by United in 2018, choosing not to publicly dissect the club’s decision. Instead, the former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss stressed that any meaningful reflection must happen privately.
“What happened during the 14 months Ruben was there is something only Ruben can analyse,” Mourinho said. “I believe he will do that with his staff. Whether he chooses to share his conclusions publicly is entirely up to him.”
Amorim was relieved of his duties after Manchester United cited the need for a reset in order to improve their Premier League fortunes. Darren Fletcher has since been placed in charge on an interim basis, while names such as Oliver Glasner, Roberto De Zerbi and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have emerged as possible long-term replacements.
Given his history at United and his shared nationality with Amorim, Mourinho was also asked whether the sacking could negatively affect the reputation of Portuguese managers in England. He dismissed that suggestion outright.
“I don’t understand why it would,” he said. “Each coach answers for himself. Personally, I don’t see it that way at all.”
Mourinho went on to revisit his own time at Old Trafford, reiterating his belief that he arrived at the club during a period of instability following the departures of Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill. Despite winning trophies and finishing second in the Premier League, he felt continuity was never truly granted.
“When I arrived, the club was still living through a crisis,” Mourinho explained. “We won trophies, we finished second, but it still wasn’t enough for stability.”
However, he suggested that Amorim’s situation reflected signs of cultural change at United under the club’s new ownership. Mourinho pointed out that Amorim was backed for a prolonged period despite overseeing what became the club’s worst Premier League season.
“That level of trust shows that something is changing at the club,” he said. “We all agree Ruben is a coach with great potential and strong character. With stability, I believe he has the ability to do an incredible job at Manchester United.”
