Former Barcelona and Liverpool player, Javier Mascherano is set to begin his coaching career when he takes charge of the Argentine's U-20 football team next year (2022).
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) confirmed the news on Thursday, December 9th, 2021. According to the statement released by the association, the 37-year-old will take over the team from Fernando Batiste in January 2022.
Mascherano started his career in Argentina with River Plate before making his first move to the Premier League to play for West Ham United in the summer of 2006. He joined Liverpool in the January transfer window in 2007. It was at Liverpool he made his mark in the Premier League playing 139 games. He was also part of the team that lost the UEFA Champions League final to AC Milan.
