Finidi George set for a return to coaching after leaving Super Eagles

SHARE

Former Super Eagles coach Finidi George is getting back into coaching to join Rivers united after leaving his position with the men's national team.

Reports suggest that Finidi George is going to be the new manager for Nigeria Professional Football League team Rivers United in the upcoming 2024/25 football season. The club is looking for a new manager after a disappointing end to the 2023/24 season.

Why did Finidi leave the Super Eagles?

The reports from the camp of Finidi George confirmed that he decided to leave his role as Super Eagles head coach after the Nigeria Football Federation announced that they would bring in a foreign technical adviser to assist him without his knowledge. This was after the Super Eagles failed to secure a victory in both of their 2026 World Cup qualifying games against South Africa and Benin Republic.

Why do Rivers United want Finidi George?

Rivers United is hoping that Finidi George can replicate the success he had with Enyimba when he led the club to a league title during the 2022/23 season.

The team had a good start to the season, reaching the quarter-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup, but they struggled in the league, finishing outside the top spots and failing to secure a continental ticket for the first time in three years.

Reports from Rivers United indicate that the club was not pleased with the interim manager's performance towards the end of the season after the sacking of Stanley Eguma.
