Emi Martinez opens up on ambitions to win a trophy with Aston Villa
Emi Martinez in his latest press conference has opened up on his ambition and desire to win a trophy with Aston Villa.
Emi Martinez is determined to claim silverware with Aston Villa, a goal that aligns with his impressive career achievements so far this is an ambition he expressed in the latest pre-match press conference for the club. Although the World Cup-winning goalkeeper has enjoyed remarkable success with Argentina, his club-level accolades remain elusive.
Martinez has expressed his frustrations openly, making it clear that his desire for trophies is strong. His journey, which began at Independiente and led to an outstanding stint at Aston Villa, includes setting a club record for most Premier League clean sheets in a season. However, personal milestones are not enough for the shot-stopper, as he’s keen to translate individual brilliance into team triumphs. Aston Villa will be eager to support his ambitions, and with Martinez's skill, experience, and determination, he could be instrumental in leading the team to success.
At 32, Martinez is focused on ending Aston Villa's long trophy drought, with the club’s last major honour being the 1996 League Cup. The FA Cup presents an even greater challenge, as their most recent triumph in the competition dates back to 1957. Nevertheless, Martinez’s passion for winning is evident as he prepares for the FA Cup campaign and hopes to inspire his teammates to achieve glory.
Speaking ahead of an FA Cup third-round tie against West Ham on Friday, Martinez reflected on his ambitions, "I want silverware for this club. I was very frustrated when we were knocked out by Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup. The fans deserve a trip to Wembley at the end of the season. It’s something the club has missed for many years. I know how special winning cups is, both for myself and for the fans, and I want to experience that with Aston Villa."

He added, "Anything is possible in football. When I joined, the team had just finished 17th. Since then, we’ve progressed, finishing 11th, seventh, and fourth. This season has been good, though not exactly what I want. Competing in the Champions League and fighting for a top-four spot is tough. We had to sell players, and the new signings needed time to adapt, but now they’re settling in, and we are doing well."
