Chelsea Football Club have been known as a club that struggles when it comes to getting it right in signing a striker that fits into their style of play. Only a handful of players have distinguished themselves in their striking positions, the list includes Didier Drogba, Diego Costa and to an extent Hernan Crespo.

The Blues signed Romelu Lukaku during the summer transfer window for a record transfer fee of €100 million from Inter Milan. The decision to sign the Belgian was taken by the club, following the inability of Timo Werner who was signed the previous season (2019/20) from RB Leipzig to fill in the void of a frontman who can score at least 20 goals.

Romelu Lukaku's Stats at Chelsea

The Belgian started his return to Chelsea in fantastic form with goals in his opening games for the club which includes Aston Villa and Arsenal and a few in the UEFA Champions League. However, he had since failed to pick up that same form scoring just 12 goals and 2 assists in 36 games in all competitions, scoring only 5 goals in 20 Premier League appearances.

Lukaku's poor form in front of goal is one of the major reasons why Chelsea will not win a major trophy this season. The Blues have failed to compete at the highest level because of the most minute details upfront compared to the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool.

Where did it go wrong for Lukaku?

Lukaku suffered an injury during the FIFA International break in October 2021, while he was recovering he granted an interview with Sky Sports Italia. The Belgian in the interview said he wants to return to Inter Milan stating that Thomas Tuchel was not giving him the right pattern of playing style.

He had since struggled to pick up his form since he granted that interview but he has scored goals in FA Cup but has failed to live up on the big stage.

Should Chelsea Keep Lukaku?

Most players always have a first season syndrome, where they fail to pick up form until their second season at the club. Chelsea could go out in the summer transfer window and get a new striker while they sell-off Lukaku to potential buyers like Paris Saint Germain or probably reunite with Antonio Conte at Tottenham, considering that Harry Kane might move to Manchester City.

Lukaku had shown a glimpse of what he could give upfront for the Blues if he gets the perfect ball delivered to him from Chelsea's wingers. He could pick his form next season.

Which player could fill Chelsea's Striker Position?

The Blues could go out in the transfer window and break the bank just like they did with Lukaku. Erling Haaland who has been on Chelsea's radar might also get another bid from the Premier League club.

Amanda Borja who is currently on loan at Southampton and has been in fantastic form for the Saints and might be the leading man for the Blues next season.
