David De Gea returns to top-flight football in Europe
According to reports, former Man United goalkeeper David De Gea is set to return to top-flight football in Europe for the 2024/2025 season.
Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is reportedly close to securing a move to top-flight football in Europe with Fiorentina after spending over a year as a free agent.
Since his contract with Manchester United expired in June of last year, the former Spain international has been patiently waiting for offers. Now, it seems that his wait is over, as De Gea has reportedly agreed to personal terms with Serie A club Fiorentina just over a week before the new season begins, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The 33-year-old was previously linked with a move to Genoa, another Serie A team, but that deal fell through due to what was considered "unrealistic salary expectations." Although several clubs from the Saudi Pro League and MLS showed interest in signing him this summer, none of those deals materialized.
De Gea's Time at Manchester United
During his tenure at Manchester United, De Gea made over 500 appearances and collected an impressive array of honours, including a Premier League title, an FA Cup, two League Cups, three Community Shields, and the UEFA Europa League. From 2013-14 to 2015-16, he was named United's Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for three consecutive seasons, becoming the first player to achieve this feat (winning the award four times in total).
