Copa America: Argentina vs Ecaudor | Highlights: Eminialo Martinez sends Argentina to the semi-finals

Argentina booked their spot in the semi-finals of the 2024 Copa America following a victory in the game vs Ecuador, which was won on penalties after the game ended 1-1 in regulation time.

Argentina took the lead in the first half from a corner kick by Lionel Messi, which Alexis Mac Allister redirected for Lisandro Martínez to find the back of the net in the 34th minute.

However, the second half was a show between Emianlo Martinez of Argentina vs Ecuador as he made a series of saves to deny them a chance of getting back into the game. The Ecuadorians missed a big opportunity to draw level when Enner Valencia failed to score from the penalty spot.

Kevin Rodríguez pulled a chestnut out of the fire in the 91st minute when he equalized for Ecuador to make the game 1-1 sending the match to penalties in the semi-final.

The biggest shock of the penalties was when Messi missed the first penalty kick of the shoot-outs but Martinez showed why he is one of the best when it comes to penalties by saving two penalties from Ecuador. Alexis Mac Allister, Gonzalo Montiel, and final kicktaker Nicolas Otamendi confirmed their place into the semifinals of the Copa America.

However the down side for the Argentines after the victory concerns the fitness of Messi, the Inter Miami forward player did not play to his full potential during the game. They will hope that he regains his fitness before the semi-final game.

Argentina will face the winner of the game between Venezuela and Canada for a place in the finals, as they look to retain the title they won the last time in what will most likely be Messi’s last major international competition.
