Chelsea's Reece James suffers a devastating injury blow ahead of a new season

Chelsea captain Reece James has reportedly suffered a huge injury blow ahead of the upcoming 2024/2025 club football season.

It has been reported that Chelsea defender Reece James has encountered a setback ahead of the new season due to a fresh hamstring injury.

The wing-back experienced discomfort during training this week after the team returned from their pre-season tour in the USA.

James, who started in all five of Chelsea's pre-season friendly matches, was sidelined for their last game against Inter Milan at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, August 11, 2024.

According to sources within the club, who spoke to The Athletic anonymously to maintain relationships, the hamstring injury is considered minor.

In his absence, Malo Gusto is expected to step in, having gained valuable experience during the 2023/2024 season when James was also sidelined.

Chelsea is expected to be cautious with James' recovery, especially since he is already set to miss the first three games of the season due to a suspension.

The injury also puts James' participation in Chelsea’s UEFA Conference League play-off matches in late August in doubt. The club is reportedly aiming for a potential return date of September 14, when Chelsea faces Bournemouth.

James, now 24, has been plagued by recurring hamstring problems, which have limited his appearances in recent years. Last season, he played in only five Premier League games following surgery in December to address a persistent issue in his left leg.
