Following speculations about the postponement of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, CAF have released a statement to shed more light on the reports

The football governing body for Africa, CAF in an official statement have denied the reports of the postponement of AFCON 2025.

CAF through the official social media handle CAF_Media have denied these speculations categorising them as unfound. The statement read, "Reports on AFCON 2025 are untrue. The CAF Executive Committee will meet, deliberate and make a decision on the AFCON 2025 dates. CAF will thereafter issue official statement on the matter."

Previously, there were reports that the Secretary General of the African football body, Veron Mosengo-Omba, had confirmed that the delay was caused by a clash with the restructured FIFA Club World Cup, scheduled to take place from June 15 to July 13, 2025, in the United States.

Mosengo-Omba stated, “We could play the CAN after the Club World Cup, but would it be in the interest of the players, who played the whole season, to go to America and return immediately to participate in the CAN afterwards?”

The revised FIFA Club World Cup structure will include 32 clubs, with four African teams namely Al-Ahly, Wydad Casablanca, Esperance Tunis, and Mamelodi Sundowns. The event is anticipated to witness wide African player representation from clubs in Africa, Europe, and Asia. However, CAF spokesperson Lux September stated that the specific dates for the AFCON 2025 competition are still being deliberated amidst postponement allegations.
