Days after the initial confirmation of Finidi George as the head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, AFCON 2025 and the World Cup 2026 if the team qualifies, has been unveiled in a press conference session held today, Monday, May 13, 2024. He was unveiled by the Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh alongside the NFF.

After the departure of Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro, the former Real Betis winger was given a permanent appointment. He served as an assistant to Peseiro during the last African Cup of Nations held in Ivory Coast, where the team managed to secure the second position.

The event which was held in Abuja at the media centre of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in the Federal Capital Territory was attended by the leaders of the NFF and media personalities as well. The minister stated, “Any country I find an indigenous coach sitting on the bench, I always feel very proud and I am glad that we have an opportunity that have a Nigerian coach, Finidi George, as football men national team coach.”

What we think of the new appointment

It remains to be seen if Finidi George and his team can live up to the expectations of over 100 million Nigerians in his new role at the National side, for a coach who had worked with the team prior to his interim position for friendlies, we have not been fully impressed with what he has offered so far.

From all indications, the players feel comfortable with him in charge and we believe this trust and respect might also be rewarded with a good performance from the team.

There is all to play for at the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and it might just be the right time to see what the former Eyinmba of Aba coach has to offer on the big stage.
