Asisat Oshoala sparks debate with her comment on Morocco, WAFCON and AFCON

Asisat Oshoala has sparked an intense debate on social media following her comment on Morocco, WAFCON, AFCON, and CAF.
Super Falcons star Asisat Oshoala has publicly questioned the growing concentration of African football activities in Morocco following Nigeria’s exit from AFCON 2025.
Nigeria were eliminated in the semi-final by host nation Morocco at the Complexe Sportif Moulay Abdellah, losing on penalties. While the Super Eagles did not produce their best performance, the match generated debate due to several refereeing decisions by Ghanaian official Daniel Laryea.
Oshoala, who had earlier warned that Morocco could use questionable methods to secure victory, reacted after the match by raising concerns about the administration of African football.
Oshoala speaks out after AFCON 2025 defeat
Since 2023, Morocco has hosted several major CAF events, including the U-23 AFCON, U-17 AFCON, multiple CAF Awards ceremonies, and the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations. Moroccan players also won both the men’s and women’s CAF Player of the Year awards for 2025, prompting discussion among fans.
In a post on social media following Nigeria’s elimination, Oshoala commented on the frequency of CAF events being held in Morocco.
“The big question here is when will this whole CAF compensation to Morocco end,” she wrote.
“Awards, tournaments and all… It’s getting boring now. We need other countries to step up. Everything concerning African football happens in Morocco; feels like that’s the new HQ.”
The Al Hilal forward also suggested that other African nations, particularly in West Africa, should take a more active role in hosting major tournaments.
“We can co-host with our neighbours if we are serious. Cameroon, Ghana, Benin and Togo are all next door… you can’t tell me two of these five neighbouring countries can’t co-host AFCON.”
