African Teams that Reached the Knockout Stages of the FIFA World Cup | See List

The FIFA World Cup has always had African representatives whenever the competition takes centre stage.

The representation of the African teams had varied from one to three and the highest number from the continent is five which has been the situation to date. Ghana, Senegal, Cameroon, Tunisia and Morocco will be representing Africa at Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Notjustok has decided to highlight the success of African teams that have qualified beyond the first round of the FIFA World Cup.

(1) Morocco: ( Mexico' 86)

Morocco became the first African team to advance to the knockout stage ot the FIFA World Cup by reaching the second round. They achieved this feat at the 1986 World Cup which was hosted in Mexico. Fans of the North Africans will hope their team can replicate such performance in Qatar.

(2) Cameroon: ( Italy'90)

The West African country also achieved this feat at the 1990 FIFA World Cup which was hosted in Italy. The Indomitable Lions reached the Quater-finals of the tournament. They also wrote their names in the history books by becoming the first African country to beat the defending Champions (Argentina) . They also became the first team to win a World Cup match with just nine players (1-0) vs Argentina.

(3) Nigeria: ( USA' 94, France'98, Brazil' 2014)

The Super Eagles were impressive at the USA 1994 World Cup as they qualified from their group to advance to the second round of the competition. They also repeated such a feat at the next world cup which was hosted in France at the 1998 World Cup becoming the first African team to advance the knockout stage for the second consecutive competition.

Nigeria also wrote their name in the history books as it became the first African nation to reach the Round of 16 thrice, this was achieved during the 2014 World Cup hosted in Brazil where they lost to France.

(4) Senegal: ( Korea/Japan 2002)

The Terenga Lions as they are popularly called, shocked the world at the 2002 Korea Japan World Cup by beating defending nation France in their opening group game. The debutants reached the Quater final of the competition where they lost on the golden goal rule against Uruguay.

(5): Ghana: (Germany 2006 & South Africa 2010)

The Black Stats gave Africa a good representation at the first World Cup that was hosted in Africa. The West African team were minutes away from becoming the first African team to reach the Semi-finals but a missed penalty from Asamoah Gyang in the last minute of the extra time against Uruguay ended that dream. They also became the first African team to reach the quater-finals after reaching the Round of 16 in the previous world cup.

(6) Algeria : ( Brazil' 2014)

The North Africans have qualified for the knockout stage just once which was at the World Cup hosted in Brazil. They reached the round of 16 of the competition where they lost to the eventual winners of the tournament ( Germany)
