The Super Eagles of Nigeria are looking to embark on another strike action ahead of the crucial quater final clash against Algeria.

The threat to down tools is coming four months adter they decided to boycott training ahead of the World Cup playoffs against Gabon. The players are said to be unhappy over unresolved issues relating to unpaid bonuses and allowances, with frustration growing within the camp as the match approaches.

BBC Sports writer Oluwashina Okeleji confirmed the news on his official X account on Wednesday, January 7, 2025. According to him the players are deciding to go on strike over unpaid allowances from the previous games against Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique and Tunisia at the ongoing AFCON 2025.

He said in his post,

"Players and coaching staff of #Nigeria are waiting on AFCON 2025 bonus payments. Win bonuses from four matches - vs Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda & Mozambique have yet to be received. Squad remain focus but will NOT train or travel to Marrakech on Thursday if this isn't resolved."

He continued,

"Three-time #AFCON champions #Nigeria have a strange ability to self-sabotage. Officials made a promise to the players & coaching staff ahead of the #AFCON2025 tournament. After going unbeaten to reach the quarterfinal vs #Algeria, the squad will NOT train or travel on Thursday."

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is believed to be working behind the scenes to defuse the tension and ensure the players’ demands are resolved swiftly. Officials are keen to avoid a repeat of previous standoffs that negatively affected team morale and performance. With the Algeria match looming large, the priority is to restore calm and unity within the squad.

The Super Eagles are expected to face a tough test against an experienced Algerian team, making stability off the pitch crucial. Any distraction could undermine Nigeria’s chances in what is seen as a pivotal game.

The supporters will be hoping that dialogue prevails, the issues are settled promptly, and attention returns fully to football as the Super Eagles aim to deliver a strong performance against Algeria.
