AFCON 2025: What is the latest update on Senegal's appeal to CAS?

The reports circulating on social media claiming that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has overturned CAF's decision and awarded the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title to Senegal are false.

As of now, CAS has not issued any final ruling on the appeal filed by the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF). The only confirmed action from the Lausanne-based court is that it registered Senegal's appeal against CAF's decision to award the title to Morocco following the controversial AFCON final.

The false reports appear to stem from a fabricated document circulating online, claiming that CAS ruled in Senegal's favour. However, fact-checks have identified several inconsistencies, including an incorrect case reference. The viral document cites a case number that does not match the official appeal registered by CAS, indicating that the supposed ruling is likely fake.

The confusion comes after CAF's Appeal Board ruled on March 17 that Senegal had forfeited the AFCON final under Article 84 of the competition regulations, awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory by default. Senegal strongly rejected the decision and immediately appealed to CAS, arguing that the ruling should be overturned.

However, until CAS officially delivers its verdict, neither Senegal nor Morocco can claim a new legal outcome beyond CAF's existing decision. Any reports suggesting that CAS has already restored the title to Senegal are therefore misleading.

Football fans are advised to rely on official statements from CAS, CAF, or the respective football federations rather than viral social media posts, as the legal process remains ongoing and no final judgment has been announced.
